Kathleen Wynne, the premier of Ontario, came to Seoul with a delegation of 48 business and academic leaders, eager to shore up ties with Asia’s fourth-largest economy. Her mission is expected to generate over $120 million in new partnerships. She signed 13 new agreements in health sciences and education that would add 256 new jobs in Ontario, according to the premier’s office.
“Ontario is open for business and partnerships,” the first female premier of Ontario stressed. She pointed to common strengths she sees as binding Ontario and Korea together: the ability to innovate, highly educated workforces and world-leading exporting prowess.

The EU Delegation to Korea organized a bike ride event, EU photo exhibition and the Roundtable discussion on sustainable mobility: Reducing Emissions from transport in EU and Korea. The events are part of the EU’s global initiative – ‘EU Climate Diplomacy Week’ aiming to raise public awareness on climate issues.
Seoul Car Free is celebrated worldwide – World Car Free day of 22 September – and the Seoul City is proud being part of it jointly with the European Union. Mayor Park together with EU Ambassadors representing 17 countries rode Seoul City bikes with the EU’s chosen slogan of ‘Burn Calories: Not Petrol’.
The EU photo exhibition on green architecture ‘Sustainable Living Space in the EU’ was held in Seoul from 25~29 September and is to be continued in Busan from 7~12 October. The exhibition consists of 29 photos of ‘green’ buildings provided by 17 EU Member States. (Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Latvia, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slobakia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom).

The half-day roundtable invited renowned academics, business, government officials as well as EU officials for discussion. Notably, Dr Joëlle Hivonnet, Political Head of the EU Delegation presented the European Strategy for low-emission mobility, while Dr Young-Tae Kim, Deputy Director-General at Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport outlined Korea’s transportation policy for green-house gas emission (GHG) reduction. In addition, the European and Korean experts presented specific cases and technological aspects of low-carbon mobility.

(EU CLIMATE DIPLOMACY WEEK)

주한유럽연합대표부는 “유럽연합 기후외교주간 (EU Climate Diplomacy Week)”을 맞아 오는 9월 25일(일)부터 10월 1일(토)까지 서울과 부산에서 다양한 공개 행사들을 개최할 예정이다. EU는 전 세계 주요 국가 및 도시들에서 기후변화주간과 부대행사들을 진행하여, 기후변화 문제의 심각성과 의식 재고를 촉구하고 있다.
주한유럽연합대표부는 EU 파트너십 기금(EU Partnership Instrument)의 지원으로 한국에서 이하의 행사들을 주관한다.
오늘날 EU에서 기후변화는 그 어느 때보다도 중요한 정책의제로 부상하였다. EU 회원국들은 작년 파리에서 개최된 제 21차 UN 기후변화협약 당사국총회 이후 과감한 온실가스 감축 목표설정에 합의하였으며, 전 세계 주요 파트너들과 함께 글로벌 차원의 노력을 적극 지원하고 있다. (참고로 EU는 2030년까지 1990년 대비 온실가스 배출량의 40% 감축을 목표로 하고 있다.)
주한유럽연합대표부는 유럽연합 기후외교주간을 서울과 부산에서 주관하게 된 점을 기쁘게 생각하며, 기후변화로 인한 심각한 결과에 대한 사회전반의 인식을 재고할 수 있기를 희망한다.
이번 행사를 맞아 주한유럽연합대표부의 게하르트 사바틸 (Gerhard Sabathil) 대사는, “우리 모두는 지구의 환경에 대한 책임이 있다. 미래 세대의 보호자로서 이 사실을 엄중히 받아들여야 한다. 정부, 기업 등은 큰 정책을 수립하고 관리하는 역할을 하겠지만, 우리도 각자 일상 속에서 온실가스 감축 노력에 충분히 기여할 수 있다. 이러한 노력은 우리의 자녀들, 우리가 살아가는 지구를 위한 당연한 일이다” 라는 소감을 밝혔다.
주요 경제 강국인 대한민국은 EU의 중요한 전략적 동반자로 기후변화 및 저탄소 분야 역시 양자간 주요 협력분야로 자리잡고 있다. 최근에는 비지니스 관계 증진을 위한 EU Gateway to Korea 및 배출권 거래시스템 운영에 대한 기술적 지식 교환을 목적으로 하는 한-EU 배출권 거래시스템(ETS)과 같은 시그니처 프로젝트가 발족되었다. 한편, 한국은 여전히 세계 7위의 온실가스 배출국으로, 친환경적 경제로의 전환과 산업 경쟁력 유지 사이에서 균형을 맞추어야 하는 입장이다.
게하르트 사바틸 (Gerhard Sabathil) 대사는 “EU와 대한민국 모두 온실가스 감축 방안, 특히 저탄소 교통 및 수송 방안을 적극적으로 수용할 필요가 있다. 새로운 기술이 기후변화 대응에 어떤 역할을 할 수 있을지 이해하는 것은 대단히 중요하다”고 지적하였다. 마지막으로 “EU의 온실가스 감축목표는 2030년까지 40%지만, 해당 사안에 대한 전 세계 시민들의 의식은 100% 증가되길 희망한다” 고 덧붙였다.
EU CLIMATE DIPLOMACY WEEK: 25 SEPTEMBER – 1 OCTOBER 2016
The EU Delegation to Korea is organising the “EU Climate Diplomacy Week” from 25 September through 1 October. The Climate Diplomacy Week is a global climate initiative of the European Union to raise public awareness on climate issues. During the week, the EU Delegation, with support of the EU Partnership Instrument, organises and supports public events in Seoul and Busan. The events include:
Climate change has never been higher on the EU policy agenda. Following the COP21 in Paris last year, the EU Member States agreed to set ambitious reduction targets for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Along with GHG reduction efforts within Europe, the EU is actively engaging with key partners around the world to support global climate action.
The EU Strategy for Low-Emission Mobility, published in December 2015, stipulates a 40% cut in greenhouse emissions compared to 1990 levels by 2030, a 27% minimum share of renewable energy and a 27% minimum improvement in energy efficiency.
To help raise awareness of the impact of climate change, the EU Delegation to Korea is pleased to organise the EU Climate Diplomacy Week in Seoul and Busan to raise public awareness of climate issues. The week includes a bicycle ride, photo exhibitions and roundtable discussions and is part of a 12 month project to raise awareness across society of the consequences of climate change.
The Republic of Korea is one of the major economic powerhouses and an important strategic partner of the European Union. Climate change and low carbon development, as well as business-to-business cooperation in green sectors remain dominant areas in EU-Korea cooperation. The recently launched signature projects are the EU Gateway to Korea, which fosters business ties, and the EU-Korea Emission Trading System (ETS) which aims to exchange technical knowledge on operational aspects of the ETS.
However, challenges still abound. As the seventh biggest CO2 emitter, Korea has to balance the global demand for a green economy with the demand for maintaining industrial competitiveness.
The Ambassador continued, “The EU and Korea both need to embrace low-carbon development and low-carbon mobility options to meet their emission targets. Accordingly, it is essential to understand how technologies and climate change action make a difference. We aim to cut emissions by 40% but we have to increase public awareness by 100%.”

Tomorrow’s India 조직 대한민국에서의 100억달러 기회들과 연계
싱가폴에서의 성공적인 데뷰 이후 “Tomorrow’s India 글로벌 대회”는 인도와 한국간의 사업, 교육, 문화 등 분야에서의 국제적 협업과 제휴의 개발에 중점을 둘 계획이다.
오는 9월 26-28일에 걸쳐 Tomorrow’s India 조직의 글로벌 대회가 서울, 인천(송도), 경기에서 개최될 예정이다. 매년 두 차례에 걸쳐 열리는 글로벌 대회는 뉴델리에 위치한 비영리기관인 Global Social (India) Foundation의 기획 아래 이루어진다. 본 대회는 인도의 역량을 전 세계에 알리는 것을 목표로 삼고 있으며 기업가, 지식인, 그리고 문화계 인사들 간 연계의 촉매 역할을 역임하고자 한다. 이번 대회에서는 여러 주제에 관한 패널 세션과 기업 소개 및 한국의 기업과 대학의 견학을 포함한 여러 개의 네트워킹 기회들이 예정되어 있다.
Tomorrow’s India의 설립자이자 대표이사 HP Singh 씨는 “인도와 한국은 같은 광복절 날짜를 공유하기도 하고 고대적부터의 역사적인 관계를 가져온 한편 지난 20여년동안 기업간의 관계도 돈독히 쌓아올려 현재 현대, 엘지, 삼성, 롯데, 금호 등 유수 브랜드를 포함하여 약 600개의 한국 기업이 인도에 진출해있다. 이러한 현실을 바탕으로 인도의 기업들 또한 자국의 100억달러 규모에 달하는 인프라, 스마트시티, 철도, 전력공급, 및 기타 다양한 사업분야에 참여할 한국기업들과 새로운 관계를 형성해야 할 시기이다.
인도는 Narendra Modi 수상의 지도 아래 한국과 일곱개의 양자 협정을 맺은 상태이다. 인도와 한국은 양국간의 관계를 이미 특별전략적협력 수준으로 격상시켰고 이로 인해 전자기기, 철강, 제조, 해운, 그리고 R&D 분야에서의 기회들이 넓혀질 양상이다. 양국은 또한 사업의 원활한 진행을 위해 조세제도를 개선하여 항만통과가 신속하게 이루어지게끔 조정했다.
Global Social (India) Foundation의 대표이사인 Yogesh Chopra씨에 의하면 “다음 달 인도와 한국은 양국간의 Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA)를 다음 차원으로 격상시키기 위해 협상을 재개하게 되는데 이로 인해 교육분야에서의 기회들 또한 생성될 예정이다. 현재 인도에는 약 300명의 한국 학생들이 있는데 이는 중국에 있는 30,000명과 대조된다. 양국은 또한 이미 영화제작 음향/영상 부문에서의 공동제작을 비롯하여 에니메이션과 방송 프로그램과 연관된 협력 협정에 서명한 상태다.”
올해 초 개최되었던 Tomorrow’s India의 싱가폴 대회에는 약350명의 사업가들이 싱가폴, 호주, 한국, 일본 등지에서 모여 100명의 인도 사업가들과 같이 시간을 보냈다. 싱가폴 대회때 참석한 주요인사들로는 주싱가폴 인도판무관 H.E. Ms. Vijay Thakur Singh; 싱가폴 정부 특사 Gopinath Pillai 대사, 싱가폴국립대학 동남아연구소 회장, 아폴로 그룹의 Suneeta Reddy, Thyrocare의 A Velumani, 아쇼카대학의 Pramath Sinha, 그리고 인도의 유명 광고감독 Prahlad Kakkar 등이 참석하였고, 파트너기관으로는 Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), Singapore Exhibition & Convention Bureau (SECB), Singapore Tourism Board (STB), Global Cultural Alliance (GCA), India Retail Forum (IRF) 등이 참석했다.
싱가폴대회에는 또한 스타트업과 젊은 기업가들에게 싱가폴정부에서 제공하는 특별플랫폼이 선보였고, 이를 답습하기 위해 Action Community for Entrepreneurship (ACE), Nanyang Technical University, National University of Singapore and Temasek Polytechnic 등에서 참석했다. 인도측에서는 JK Business School, Amity University, University of Delhi, Mumbai University, Vivekananda Institute of Professional Studies, Lovely Professional University, IBS Business School, Pearl Academy – Design College, School of Planning and Architecture and Galgotias University 등의 대학에서 참석했다.

The 5th International Congress on Lipid Metabolism & Atherosclerosis (ICLA 2016) will be held with 52nd Fall Conference of the Korean Society of Lipidology & Atherosclerosis at Conrad Seoul Hotel on September 9~10, 2016.
This two-day event will provide in depth knowledge and open new perspectives from basic research to clinican medicine in Lipid metabolism and Atherosclerosis.

In order to celebrate the 71th anniversary of Korea’s Independence, the National Museum of Korean History hosted a special music concert on the Korea’s Independence day on August 15, 2016. The world-class young music artists: violinist Jihye Lee and pianist Taehyeong Kim performed Violin Sonata in A Major (C. Franck), Habanera Op.21. No.2 (P. Sarasate), Hungarian Dances No. 2,3,5 (J. Brahms).
